When you want to make a compelling and overall great interface, remember this quote:
“Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
– Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Having less is not less valuable. It's ok to have blank areas. When others ask about the blank spaces, it's a seperator and content focus technique. At first you'll fail to have nothing, but that's not the goal. Keep working at it and take away pieces and components until it's just right. Look at your competitors and see how they don't know what they want to tell you so they add everything they can think of. Clear focused design intent.
